Hi, I’m Rob
Sometimes people I’m especially close to call me Rob. Working with clay and creating artful pieces for everyday use is an important and intimate experience for me. That’s why when you’re holding or using a piece I’ve handcrafted with care, you can call me Rob.
I began my ceramics training in Portland, OR at my alma mater, Lewis and Clark College. Unfortunately it wasn’t until one of my last semesters at school that I finally enrolled in an intro to ceramics class. After gradation, I continued taking classes at the local community college. I moved to Augusta, Georgia with my husband for a year, where I apprenticed with Tire City Potters, where I learned most of my throwing and production skills. In 2020, we moved to Richmond, Virginia where (after months of shut down and time away from clay), I found a new, wonderful clay community.
My goal is to create forms that are flawlessly functional as well as whimsically and organically designed. I put meticulous care into shapes and ergonomics with the hopes of creating pieces that are comforting and comfortable to use on a daily basis. At the same time, my glaze designs are gestural, based on a quick and decisive dip into the glaze bucket and flick of the wrist. Each piece has it’s own shape and style while still being part of a set and a cohesive body of work.
Precise and organic, whimsical and meticulous. These are just a few of the concepts I strive to explore in my work. And of course, at the end of the day my goal is to make you a damn good mug for your morning coffee, evening tea, and everything in between.
